Well, it depends on the species. If you are talking about a ferruginous pygmy owl, the wingspan is quite small--up to 8 inches. It hunts prey in grassy areas--fields surrounded by forests, and usually does so in the day--unlike the common misconception that all owls hunt at night.





However, if you are talking about a barn owl, this is a whole different family completely. The wingspan is 75-100 cm, and loves grassy fields to hunt. They are strictly nocturnal, and they don't use their vision when hunting--rather, they rely on their unique ear structures to pick up on noises. Barn owls nest in hollowed out areas without any nesting material.





Owls can vary completely, depending on the species you want to research. Same with hawks--I suggest that you choose a species, and work from there.
